Welcome to our website . . .

At Vane Road Primary phonic teaching begins in Reception. Children are taught in small ability groups. This is to ensure children are taught at a pace that is both supportive and challenging and suited to their stage of development.

The school uses Letters and Sounds phonics scheme to teach phonics.

Children are closely monitored and are assessed at the end of each term.

Once children start Year 1 they are taught within their class groups. This helps to ensure all children are exposed to all sounds and are given the opportunity to gain all the skills they need to succeed in phonics.

Towards the end of Year 1 all children across the country will take part in the phonics screening. This is where children have the opportunity to apply the skills they have been taught in phonics to read a combination of 'real and nonsense words.'

Children who do not meet the required standard during the screening will then re-take it again in Year 2.
